Can anyone help me in order to find a future job ?
« on: August 23, 2011, 03:43:40 PM »

Hello to everyone,

I’m new here (actually I followed up someone’s advice in signing up  Grin-thank you CptRon)) so let me introduce myself: I’m an ex-member of the French Foreign Legion (I mainly served as a team medic in a combat unit) I served there for 7 years and a half, and now I would like a change in my career. I’m interested in working as an offshore medic, but the problem is that I have a hard time finding a job opportunity. I don’t know if it’s whether for my resume or my qualifications. Most of the jobs that I’ve applied for demand offshore experience, but if I don’t have an opportunity to prove myself and my valour, how will I ever gain any offshore experience.
I’m hoping that here I’ll will be able to meet the right peoples that can give me the right advices on what to do(mostly what not do to)and make some new contacts that can help me find a job opportunity in the near future.
So if anyone has any advices, you are more than welcome to write me

Alex,

Thanks for your post. No doubt your dilema is one that so many entry level people face. How can you get offshore experience if no one gives you the chance to prove yourself. This is the roadblock that has turned many a good hand away from a promising career offshore.

There are no easy, quick fire answers. I tell people to (in the beginning) take whatever position they can get -even if it is making up bunks or washing dishes - it's on the rig. That counts! If you can just get six months experience under your belt you have "offshore experience".

Another good place try is on the crew / supply / utility boats that supply the rigs. The position you would apply for there would be deckhand or ordinary seaman. Again, this counts as offshore experience.

What compounds all of this is the fact that (because of the economic loss of jobs) there are thousands trying to get work offshore that would normally not be seeking employment in this field.

As for your resume, it could use some work. The resume is your front line of contact, you want it to represent you in the best light possible. Your particular skill, medic, is a good one to have and it is one that jobs are opening up for.

Hope this helps...
