Yacht to commercial, need seatime
« on: June 26, 2011, 07:22:57 AM »

Hello Capt. Ron and Readers,

I am a mate on a 100 ft motor yacht.  I have 5 years of experience, but because of the nature of yachts (mostly sitting at the dock) I find myself wanting for seatime for that big ticket.  I have about 500 days now,  and my stcw95.  My plan is to get my mmd, twic, and, hopefully AB over the next few months.  I really want to move into the commercial realm, and I was thinking crew supply boats, because two of the captains I've worked for racked up some serious time that way.  What should I do to get started?  I just turned 30, is that too old??  Please help!

30 is not too old at all, in fact it is "just right" for offshore oil job employment.
Go ahead an get your MMD, TWIC and AB and then start apply to all the companies that
operate offshore supply / crew / utility vessels.
You might have to start out on a crew boat, that's no problem, everyone has to start somewhere.
Make sure you have a good resume as employers really scrutinize them these days.

Cheers!
Cpt Ron
